UFC 85 – The PitBull Prevails

London, June 7- Ft. Lauderdale hometown boy Thaigo “Pit Bull” Alves scored a stunning TKO over former two time welter weight champion Matt Hughes.

Round one began with Hughes shooting in, but unsuccessfully taking down Alves. In Hughes second attempt Alves was able to defend against the takedown but was pushed to the cage. Matt immediately pulled guard to get Alves on the mat. Alves was able to get some clean shots at Hughes and then get up to the standing position. At 3:22 Alves scored with a knee kick to Hughes’s face, then followed up with a takedown. Although Hughes was taken down, he was able to sustain the dominant position. Hughes was able to keep the Pit Bull down until thirty five seconds left in round two, where Alves was able to maneuver himself and get up on his feet. In a brief scramble Thiago was able to get on top from a take down attempt of Hughes. Twelve seconds left in the round Alves got off some good shots on Hughes.

In the second round Matt again tried to shoot in for a takedown but instead took a hard knee to the face and started bleeding. Alves was looking to overpower Hughes while he was on his back, but Hughes showed good defense and was able to get on his feet. Wasting no time the Pit Bull shot in with a flying knee, putting Hughes down on the mat. One punch later referee Herb Dean stopped the fight giving Alves the win by TKO.

Bisping vs Day

London, June 7, 2008- England’s own Michael “The Count” Bisping improved his record to 17-1 after getting a first round TKO over Jason Day.

Unwilling to lose at home and with the crowed behind him Bisping scored a takedown on Day at 3:23 of round one. Bisping stood up and landed some clean shots at Day who was lying on his back on the mat. Bisping said before the match that he would be the aggressor. He was true to his word. At 2:38 Bisping got side control. Day, who has good ground work, was able to recover and get back on his feet. 2:12 Bisping scored another takedown and got into a dominant position. Bisping briefly got into a full mount, but Day scrambled out of it. It did little help for Day. Bisping was relentless, holding Day from the back and pounding on him. Day did a good job covering up but he was still getting bombed. A minute and a half left in round one Day could not defend himself from Bisping’s full onslaught. Referee Dan Miragliotta was forced to stop the match.
