ISKA held The Amateur Mixed Martial Arts referee seminar on Sunday March 29,2009 at the Hyatt Place Hotel in Plantation FL. ISKA rep. John Morrison headed the seminar to about one hundred in attendance.
Subjects that were discussed at the seminar were refereeing basics, rules, refereeing responsibilities, refereeing mechanics and refereeing judgment. Referee Troy Waugh was in attendance and gave a little insight on refereeing. He explained how safety of the match was the number one priority and how the lives of the fighters are in the referee’s hands. Fight Dr. Nelson Hamilton was also in attendance. He explained to the attendees the importance of good rapport between the fight doctor and the referee.
Rep. Morrison made it clear to the attendees that if they wanted to be a referee for the glamour that they were at the seminar for the wrong reason.
“Why do you want to become a referee? If your answer is it looks like a cool job and I will be seen in the ring, then thank you for coming to the seminar but your services will not be needed. If you’re here because you think you can do a good job, or you think you can stop a fight in a split second to save a fighter’s life, then welcome”.
ISKA will be holding a Kickboxing Referee Seminar in the next couple of months. There are many promoters that want to hold events with both MMA and Kickboxing fights. A referee will need to be certified in both to work in the events.
